One of the hardest truths many indie authors eventually realize is this:
Most social media platforms were never truly designed for long-term book discovery.
They were designed to maximize:
short attention spans
quick reactions
fast entertainment
endless scrolling
Which means books often compete against:
viral videos
trending memes
entertainment clips
fast-consumption content
And unfortunately, books usually require slower attention and deeper interest from readers.
This is one reason many authors feel frustrated with book marketing online.
A post may perform well for a few hours.
Maybe even a day.
But once engagement slows down, visibility usually collapses with it.
That’s because feed-based algorithms prioritize what keeps people scrolling not necessarily what deserves long-term discovery.
The result?
Many authors end up:
constantly reposting
chasing engagement
depending on algorithm luck
struggling with inconsistent visibility
The issue usually isn’t the quality of the book.
In many cases, it’s the environment the book is being promoted inside.
Modern book discovery behaves differently.
Readers often discover books through:
searchable recommendations
niche genre searches
curated reader spaces
recommendation systems
visual search platforms
That’s why discoverability matters more than temporary exposure.
This is also why I built the SBV “Promote My Book” spotlight system — helping selected indie authors place their books in front of my active 10K+ readers audience on my Pinterest books recommendations platform.
Instead of relying entirely on short-term engagement spikes, the goal is to create stronger reader-focused visibility opportunities around books already ready for discovery.
Current spotlight options include:
5 Promo Recs
10 Promo Recs
15 Promo Recs
Best suited for authors with:
published books
strong presentation
5+ Amazon reviews
